When dealing with significant acne (not just adolescence, but also the acne that pops up in our 30s and 40s due to hormonal changes), what are some types of makeup that we should be looking for (please include foundation, mascara, blush, etc)? And why?
Always use oil free products when dealing with acne. A matte finish is also helpful to minimize any light reflection that can accentuate uneven skin texture. Go for matte blush and a matte finish foundation. Try Cover FX BB Gel an anti-acne foundation. The light weight texture feels very refreshing on acne prone skin, salicylic acid helps to treat the acne while the pigment covers the breakout.
TIP: always clean your make-up brushes and tyools to ensure you reduce bacteria.

Do you have any makeup tips for covering/dealing with acne-prone skin?
Always use clean brushes to cover acne, don’t use your fingers. Apply a light application of foundation over the entire face. This will cover the majority of redness and blemishes. Then use a patting or stippling technique to build coverage in areas where you still see blemishes or redness. If you still see areas that need coverage, apply a little concealer with a concealer brush just in areas where you need more coverage. Set with Matte Setting Powder for all day wear.

How important is having clean makeup brushes when one is dealing with the above skin issues? And why?
VERY!!! Brushes can hold bacteria. On all skin, but especially sensitive skin needs to use clean tools. Brushes are very easy to clean, you can use brush cleanser, facial cleanser, dish soap or hand soap. Clean them once a week to reduce bacteria on the skin and help reduce breakout and bacteria. For very sensitive or acne-prone skin, clean after every make-up application.
